Coaching vs Therapy? Which one do you need?




1. If you have this dilemma, you might want to ask yourself, what's telling me that I'd need one or another, or both? What goals do I have? What are the topics and challenges I want to address? 



2. When you think about your challenge, which approach resonates more with you? " What change would help you move forward?" (Coaching) "What is the backstory holding me back?" (Therapy)



3. What's your current capacity to do self-work? What other events and responsibilities are you having in your life, at work, and in your relationships that require your energy and resources? How much time can you dedicate to yourself? 



3. It's possible to do coaching and therapy parallel and can be supportive of each other. Get clear on what you want to focus on with the coach and what with the therapist. If you're already engaged in one of the processes, you can raise it in a session, how and when starting a different modality would be valuable for you.



4. An ethical and professional coach will notice and gently raise if you might need to consider another type of support, may it be therapy or other healing practices. It's up to the client to make the decision, however, the coach can help you assess your options, and if needed they can make iterations in your coaching partnership, continue in a more appropriate setup (e.g. fewer sessions, a different pace, modified goals), postpone the work, or decide to stop it. 



5. At which level do you feel blocked? Emotionally, energetically, mentally? Or do you feel limited by your environment, skills, or habits? You can create a support portfolio that helps you address the right layers, and fill the gap between where you are and where you want to be. It can include coaching therapy, mentoring, skill development, holistic healing practices, an accountability group, and so on.
